Plains Game
Opportunities for plains game hunting in Southern Africa are almost endless. The variety of species and terrain can take you from open grasslands and mountains to thick bushveld, with each area bringing its own conditions and challenges. From dwarf antelope to some of Africa’s largest plains game, every hunt presents something different.
All plains game hunts are conducted on the principles of fair chase. Wind, terrain, vegetation and the behaviour of the animal will all be leveraged to give the hunter the best possible opportunity to get within range. There is never a guarantee of success. Sometimes the wind changes, animals move, or the stalk simply does not come together. That is part of hunting.
Every animal deserves the same respect, regardless of its size or the difficulty involved in hunting it. A successful hunt starts well before stepping into the field. Physical and mental preparation, well-maintained equipment and a thorough familiarity with your rifle and shooting setup all matter.
This goes beyond simply knowing your rifle’s ballistics. Knowing your ammunition, bullet performance, scope, safety, sling and shooting position, including shooting from sticks, gives you confidence and a greater chance at success when the opportunity finally comes. Hunters should put time into familiarising themselves with their equipment and their shooting before the hunt in order to maximise their overall enjoyment as well as their chance of success.
