Highveld

The Highveld of Mpumalanga offers a different setting for a South African hunting safari. At higher elevations, the landscape opens into wide grasslands, rolling hills and rocky ridges, with cooler temperatures and clear mountain air.

The species found here also differ from those typically hunted in the Lowveld. Blesbok, Black Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Eland, Vaal Rhebuck and Common Reedbuck are among the characteristic game of these areas, with zebra also occurring in some concessions. For hunters wanting to experience a different side of South African hunting, the Highveld provides a completely different range of species and a different style of hunting.

Much of the day is spent glassing from elevated ground, looking for animals before planning a stalk across the open terrain. This country often requires longer shots, with careful range estimation. Reading the wind and making use of structure in the landscape all form part of the hunt. Weather conditions here can change quickly, and temperatures can become particularly cold during the winter months, adding another element to hunting at altitude.

The Highveld also offers opportunities to enjoy some of the other activities that make this part of Mpumalanga special, including trout fishing in the rivers and dams found throughout the region.
